Torrent Technologies, Inc. is a business services provider to companies within the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The company’s need for larger infrastructure arose as a result of rapidly growing demand for its flagship product, TorrentFlood®. By early 2012 the company was attracting many large clients, however, its infrastructure was not keeping pace with the demand. Torrent decided the time had arrived to utilize the platform’s native flexibility to be compatible with emerging virtualization and hosted services and called upon cloud computing solutions provider 2nd Watch. To avoid escalating capital investments in physical environments, 2nd Watch recommended migrating the company’s infrastructure from its existing colocation facility to Amazon Web Services.
The new platform allows Torrent Technologies to leverage a highly scalable elastic computing model to accommodate customer growth and bursts of activity during major flooding events. The company will have the ability to extend its existing physical infrastructure without adding IT staff or local resources. In addition to saving Torrent 30 to 40 percent over the cost of upgrading its datacenters, the company now has the capability to open the platform to even larger clients. Torrent Technologies is currently the only service provider in its industry utilizing the cloud to enable their client companies more flexible pricing, servicing and deployment models.
2nd Watch will also build out a Pilot Light DR datacenter on AWS to replace Torrent’s current physical backup datacenter. The new DR site will provide seamless fail-over capabilities and integrate with Torrent’s existing physical datacenter with scalable features from AWS, wide-ranging functionally, and usage-based pricing.
"From the beginning, Torrent’s goal has always been to focus on being the best at what we do; providing fresh technology, innovative solutions, and customized services for insurance companies, lending institutions and the U.S. government. Migrating our disaster recovery site and our production environment to the Cloud simply makes sense for us. It is the next step in providing the additional scalability, security, and flexibility our customers are looking for," explains Torrent Technology VP of Technology, Blake Stout.
Stout continues, "We have made a habit of partnering with companies that are also the best at what they do, so when we started looking for a cloud solution partnering with 2nd Watch and AWS was a no-brainer. I look forward to our continued partnership with 2nd Watch and AWS so we can all focus on what we do best."
Amazon Web Services has published a case study on 2nd Watch’s work with Torrent Technologies, Inc, highlighting the company’s cost savings and infrastructure scalability as a result of the migration. [August 3, 2012]
