Canadian consumers and businesses are flocking to the latest smartphones and tablets, and storing larger amounts of information on these devices.But how safe is their information? McAfee has seen a large spike in malware targeted at these devices as they become increasingly attractive for cybercriminals.

In a new whitepaper by Igor Muttik, Ph.D., senior architect at McAfee Labs, titled Securing Mobile Devices:Present and Future, McAfee examines the current state of smartphones and other devices and the security risks associated with their new capabilities.
The following topics are explored: - Risks associated with Android devices as they grow in popularity worldwide
- Risks associated with iOS, Windows Phone 7, and other devices
- Changes and predictions of the mobile threat landscape
The whitepaper concludes the following: - Security for mobile devices is advancing rapidly, preventing certain types of malware.However, due to the connectivity of smartphones and the inherent problems related to the filtering of malware in app stores, mobile malware will increase
- Most malware will continue to focus on financial gains
- The advanced hardware capabilities of most smartphones, such as camera and GPS, should increase the average cost of compromise because attackers can steal more sensitive information
- Security features in operating systems, in particular Android, will have to improve along with the physical security of mobile devices
