DisplaySearch Reports Q2’06 Small/Medium Shipments of 435.4M Up 1% Q/Q and 28% Y/Y and Revenues of $5.0B Down 3% Q/Q and 2% Y/Y

DisplaySearch, an NPD Group company and the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, has released its Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report, a comprehensive examination of the small/medium display industry, which revealed Q2’06 shipments of 435.4M displays in 12 applications as shown in Table 1.

Shipment volume was up 28% Y/Y as mobile phones, sub-displays, digital cameras, PDAs, portable DVDs, automotive monitors and other applications showed strong growth. MP3s by comparison were down 22% Q/Q and 7% Y/Y, a function of both saturation and the recent forward announcements by Apple and Microsoft of new models.    Table 1: Small/Medium Display Shipments, Share and Growth by Application

The report details display shipments by 39 suppliers and display purchases by over 100 product makers in terms of display technology, size, resolution, color and ASPs for seven-quarters. Value chains are included showing quarterly purchases and shipments between set makers and display makers, broken down by display technology and application.   Display revenues were $5.0B, down 3% Q/Q and 2% Y/Y due to the continued drop in ASPs. The leading small/medium display makers in terms of revenue were Sharp, Sanyo Epson, TMDisplay, Samsung SDI, and Samsung as shown in Table 2.   Table 2: Small/Medium Display Revenue, Share and Growth by Supplier

Supplier US$M Share Growth Q/Q Growth Y/Y
Sharp $799.6 16.0% -17% 3%

Sharp produces a-Si TFTs, p-Si TFTs and CSTN LCDs and leads in mobile phone, PDA, games and other displays.  Sanyo Epson produces a-Si TFT, HTPS, p-Si TFT, MSTN and CSTN LCDs and was #2 by virtue of its strong position in mobile phones, multi-function printers and electronic viewfinders.  TMDisplay produces a-Si TFTs and p-Si TFT LCDs was #1 in auto monitors, #4 in mobile phones and #1 in MP3s.  Samsung SDI sells a-Si TFT (by purchasing cells) and produces MSTN, CSTN and PMOLEDs and was #3 in mobile phones and # 2 in subdisplays. Samsung produces a-Si and p-Si TFT LCDs and was #5 in mobile phones, #2 in PDAs and participated in automobile monitors, digital and video cameras, MP3s and others.   AMLCDs dominate shipment share by technology with a-Si at 35.6% and p-Si at 18.4%. STN has a strong total share of 41.3%, yet has been falling Q/Q.  HTPS and LCOS are competing in electronic viewfinder market, where results were mixed. OLED displays are still in their infancy with PMOLEDs having a 3.5% share and growing, while AMOLED display makers struggle with yields.     Table 3: Small/Medium Shipments, Share and Growth by Technology

Technology Units(M) Share Growth Q/Q Growth Y/Y
MSTN 69.8 16.0% -1% 7%
CSTN 110.2 25.3% -5% 8%

LTPS TFT OLED 0.1 0.0% 6% 4475%
HTPS TFT LCD 2.4 0.5% -14% 24%
LCOS 2.5 0.6% 24% -17%
Total 435.4 100.0% 1% 28%

According to DisplaySearch Senior Vice President Barry Young, “Small/Medium display shipments reached their second highest quarter due to the Y/Y growth in most categories.  Revenues remain stagnant due to the drop in ASPs, but we expect a strong second half with shipments and revenues up in both quarters. Previously, we erroneously reported that Opto Tech had stopped producing PMOLED displays and was seeking a buyer.  Opto Tech does not expect to sell and should pick up production in the upcoming quarters.”
